A Word from the President

Tangier, 11 July 2026

Dear colleagues and friends,

It is with great pleasure and deep pride that I announce, on behalf of the Organizing Committee of the West Mediterranean Society of Cardiology (WMSC), the first edition of the Cardiology Congress Across the Strait, on 18–19 September 2026 at the Hôtel Barceló in Tangier.

This scientific gathering, the first of its kind held by our Society, reflects a clear ambition: to make Tangier a crossroads for encounter and exchange between cardiologists from both shores of the western Mediterranean. The programme we have built embodies this vocation, with sessions devoted to the most current advances in our field, led by leading Moroccan, Spanish and Portuguese speakers.

We are honoured to welcome a high-calibre international participation, reflected in the support of the Spanish Society of Cardiology and the Portuguese Society of Cardiology. Professor Ignacio Fernández Lozano, President of the Spanish Society of Cardiology, will personally chair the residents’ oral communications session, alongside Spanish residents who will share their work with our young Moroccan colleagues. The congress will also welcome several renowned international speakers, ensuring a demanding scientific standard and fruitful exchanges on the major questions facing cardiology today.

This congress will also be marked by a moment we already know to be historic for our young Society: we will have the distinguished honour of welcoming Professor Pedro Brugada, a world authority in cardiology and electrophysiology, whose work has lastingly shaped our discipline. His exceptional presence in Tangier is an unprecedented event for the WMSC, and we intend to pay him a special tribute on this occasion, worthy of his career and his major contribution to global cardiology.

An important place has been reserved for our younger colleagues: Moroccan and Spanish residents are warmly invited to submit their work as oral communications, with a certificate of scientific recognition awarded by the Spanish Society of Cardiology to the best presentations. For our Society, this is a way of affirming its commitment to the next generation and to the training of future generations, both Moroccan and Iberian.

On behalf of the Organizing Committee, I wish to extend my most sincere thanks to all the members of the board, the scientific committee and our partners, whose constant commitment has made this project a reality.

It is therefore with great enthusiasm that I invite you, dear colleagues, to join us in Tangier on 18 and 19 September. Your presence, your expertise and your spirit of sharing will be the best guarantors of the success of this first edition, which we hope to see become an essential annual event in Mediterranean cardiology.
